From Environmental Debt to Green Revival: The Future Path of PU Leather

In nature, fallen leaves become nutrients for the soil — everything is recycled.
In the industrial world of traditional synthetic leather, however, we have been creating an “environmental debt” ——the DMF problem
DMF (Dimethylformamide) is the most common solvent in traditional PU leather production, accounting for over 80% of the solvent-based PU market. DMF is classified as an SVHC (Substance of Very High Concern) by the EU, and its use generates large amounts of hazardous waste gas and wastewater.

The rise of waterborne PU:To move away from DMF, waterborne PU leather was developed. It uses water as the medium — non-toxic and environmentally friendly. It eliminates the pollution caused by solvent-based systems, is harmless to human health, and in many cases improves product quality and performance.

There is a common misunderstanding in the industry. Many people use “waterborne PU” and “solvent‑free PU” interchangeably.

From a strict technical standpoint:True solvent‑free PU means 100% solid content PU.It contains no solvents and no water — just direct coating. This is the ultimate process, reducing chemicals and energy consumption to the absolute minimum at the source.

What about “no waste”
When we talk about zero waste, we have to look at where PU leather offcuts go. There are two very different technological paths today:

Downcycling:Most PU waste is shredded and used as filler for low‑grade products, insulation boards, or construction materials.
This is not true recycling in a closed‑loop sense. It keeps material out of landfills and recovers some value, but it only delays the moment it becomes waste.

Chemical recycling (still expensive): Specialized recycling facilities in Europe and Japan have developed solvent‑based processes to dissolve the PU layer and separate the polymer from the fabric backing. The recovered PU can be reprocessed into new coatings or used for other industrial applications.
However, these processes are still costly and operate at a very limited scale.
